Why is the project relevant to you?

This project was designed to explore and test whether there are new methods and deeper sector insights that can help water companies improve how they forecast water use in key growth sectors. With growth ambitions and increasing resources pressures, traditional forecasting approaches alone may no longer be sufficient.

Key messages for Water industry

Most businesses plan on much shorter time horizons, typically 5 to 10 years, compared with the 25+ year planning horizons of water resource planning. As a result, even detailed stakeholder engagement will only provide high-confidence insight for the short-term.

Call to action

Market Operator Services Limited (MOSL) are continually improving the quality, completeness and consistency of their non-household consumption data. As the dataset becomes more established, forecasting based on historic trends should become more reliable.

2
Call to action

Continue sharing and adopting best practice approaches with other water companies to strengthen collective forecasting capability. Collaboration across the industry will remain essential as forecasting methods evolve and new data sources become available. This means it's important for water companies to combine short term intelligence from business engagement with longer term modelling approaches that can account for uncertainty over extended planning periods.
