Maximising planning for water

Why is the project relevant to you?

The area between Oxford and Cambridge is one of the most seriously water stressed in the country, yet it was promoted by the Chancellor in 2025 for its growth potential. As a practitioner in this field, and the common voice for water, you are likely familiar with the complexity of the water planning environment, including the numerous organisations involved and the various scales of strategies and policy documents. This study focused on local planning policy as a key way to achieve integrated water management. We've looked at how water is currently considered and how local policy can be improved to better support positive outcomes for the water system. We hope you will recognise the benefits of a holistic approach to the water system, as demonstrated by this project, and advocate for maximising the potential of planning policy for water.
