Why is the project relevant to you?

Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS’s) are new plans introduced by the Environment Act 2021 to help protect and restore nature. These strategies aim to coordinate efforts across the country to stop the loss of biodiversity and achieve the Government's nature goals for England. LNRS's will outline the actions needed to restore natural habitats, working closely with local communities, especially farmers and land managers, to ensure the best environmental results. This project has developed and tested a data driven method to include water environments ambitions within these strategies.

Key messages for Land managers

This project was a trial that created a data-driven method to identify and prioritise opportunities for nature recovery with a focus on water. Since it's based on desk research, the locations haven't been checked by experts on-site or discussed with landowners. However, if there's interest in contributing to nature recovery, there's great potential to work with the LNRS process to refine and implement these options.

1
Call to action

This project's results give important water data to help make land use decisions, balancing environmental goals with food production, housing, and development. Many LNRS will use digital mapping layers, and you might be able to overlay your own maps with identified environmental needs and opportunities, if licensing allows.

2
Call to action

Many of our suggested actions are best carried out by farmers and land managers. The project's results, which focus on water environment needs, have been included in broader LNRS work that also considers land-based environmental needs. This comprehensive list of prioritised actions is especially important for farmers and land managers, who can choose from various interventions for their land, such as those offered through Environment Land Management schemes.

3
Call to action

Engaging with stakeholders, like through catchment partnerships and local farming clusters, is crucial. It helps guide and confirm the Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) by identifying needs and environmental opportunities.
