Future Water Demand

Why is the project relevant to you?

The demand for water from our environment is increasing, partly driven by growth. Water companies supply 2 main customer groups: households, who they serve directly; and businesses where water is supplied through water wholesalers. Forecasting non household water demand is complex, and understanding this complexity is important for anyone looking to influence sustainable water use. There are opportunities for us all to advocate businesses to use water efficiently, influencing them to consider water consumption against other operational priorities.

Key messages for Environmental practitioners

Water demand varies significantly within business sectors. For example, water usage can vary widely between modern, water efficient facilities and older sites. This highlights the substantial potential for existing premises and processes to reduce their water use through improved efficiency.

1
Call to action

Accurately forecasting future water demand is essential to ensuring that weinvest in the right infrastructurenow, to secure future water supply. This is becoming increasingly important as we balance the twin pressures of environmental destination goals and economic growth ambitions in the corridor.

2
Call to action

Most non-household water use is influenced by a trade-off between water use and other operational factors. For example, within data centres, there is a balance between water use, energy consumption, and cooling system design. In hydrogen production the cooling process used has the greatest influence on water demand. And in hospitals, water use is shaped by building design, including fixtures and fittings, and the extent of water reuse infrastructure.

We can all help reduce non household water demand by consistently advocating for water efficiency as a primary consumer and spatial planning concern. Playing a key role in influencing sectors to adopt practices that lower water uses and ease pressure on the environment.
